DEHRADUN- UTTARAKHAND

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand. And is located in the northern part of India. Dehradun is a very beautiful city situated on the foothills of Garhwal Himalaya. HISTORY OF DEHRADUN- UTTARAKHAND

Before the 18th century, Dehradun is known as Gurdwara. Where all the Gurus of Sikhism used to see the gurudwara. It is believed that Dehra Dun was settled in the 18th Century by Sikh religion master, Guru Ram Rai. And its name was Dehradun, which is related to Guru. Prior to India's independence, Mahant civilization was going on in Dehradun, under which there was a Mahant's rule over all of the Dehradun which the people of that place would choose together.

STORY BEHIND THE NAME

Dehradun is consists of two words ‘dehra’ and ‘dun’ which means camp in the valley. Shri ram rai the eldest son of seventh Sikh guru har rai ji set the camp (dera) in the Doon valley for his disciples. That is why it is called Dehradun. Another people belief that it get its name from guru dronacharya of Mahabharata, who used to live in Dehradun in ancient time. Hence the city also known as ‘adobe of drona’. During the 7th century Dehradun was known as “shudhnagar”. Later this name was changed to kaalsi.

HOW TO REACH DEHRADUN- UTTARAKHAND

Dehradun By Air : The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which lies approximately 20 kilometres from the city center(Clock Tower) Dehradun, and offers daily connectivity with New Delhi 

Dehradun By Rail : There are numerous trains connecting New Delhi with Dehradun, such as the Shatabdi Express (as well as the Jan Shatabdi Express), the Mussoorie Express, and the Nizamuddin AC Special. The latter two trains are overnight trains. The journey lasts approximately 5.5 hours, depending on the train chosen. All the above mentioned trains pass through Haridwar. 

Dehradun By Road : A scenic drive no matter where you approach it from, Dehradun makes for a great road trip. When travelling from Delhi, you need to take NH58 till Roorkee (via Meerut and Muzaffarnagar), and NH72-A till Dehradun.
